AT A GLANCE: Palau Sa Font is located at the end of a narrow street in Palma's medieval quarter known as 'La Lonja'. Intricate wooden balconies almost bridge across the narrow alleyways strewn with washing lines and filled with vibrant chatter from the local bars. Until recently La Lonja had a reputation for drugs and prostitution. Now it is the fashionable cultural area noted for its excellent nightlife. * On entering Palau Sa Font you leave behind the bustle and excitement of the city and arrive to a cool and calming interior. Exquisitely designed with bright bold colours, hand crafted modern furniture and intriguing modern art, Palau Sa Font offers a relaxing haven in the heart of Palma. This is the city's hippest hotel. Its bar is open all day and the great rooftop terrace has panoramic views of the city and a refreshing plunge pool. * HIGHS: The location, right in the heart of the old city, close to cultural sights and at the hub of Palma?s nightlife. The hip designer touches. The rooftop views of the cathedral and harbour. The delicious breakfast and friendly service: just what's need after a big night out! * LOWS Designer towels made to cover designer bodies. The hotel is in a ?no tourist' drive zone, so parking your car anywhere near the hotel virtually guarantees a parking ticket. On arrival, be smart - dump your luggage and park close by in ?Parque del Mar?.* Rooms: The 19 guest rooms are simply furnished. Contrasting with the hotel's traditional exterior, their modern and clean-cut, offering comfort with style. Each room has cool pistachio green walls with cream calico curtains and blinds, crisp white duvets and wrought iron bed heads. The interiors and furnishings were designed by Hans J. Pahl, whose attention to detail and unique style won it a place in the Design Hotels directory. * Bathrooms have good showers and huge green stone sinks moulded from a single slab. Rooms are all similar, but vary in size. The junior suite has its own terrace overlooking the rooftops. All have satellite TV and minibar (hidden away in specially designed fabric cabinets), direct dial phones and air-conditioning. Individual safety boxes are available at reception. * EATING: Breakfast is served in the downstairs bar, transformed into a dining room. Minimalist designer cred still prevails over this utilitarian transformation. You'll find interesting modern paintings, funky furniture and the fully stocked bar, offering tempting relief by way of a swift ?hair of the dog? to those who have overindulged the night before. * We breakfasted on yoghurt, muesli, croissants, toast with homemade quince puree, jams and honey, accompanied by freshly squeezed orange juice. Plus the ubiquitous cold meats, salamis and cheese thought necessary to fortify visitors for the rigours of the day. * Although strictly a bed and breakfast hotel, there is no shortage of places to eat nearby. It's surrounded by some of Palma's best tapas bars and restaurants (check out Aramis just round the corner). * ACTIVITIES: * Palma has a wealth of historical and cultural places to see, many are close by, including the city?s magnificent cathedral, La Seu. *Stroll around Palma's harbour - home to some of the world's most expensive yachts. *Shop until you drop in the many nearby boutiques, all within walking distance. *Take a cocktail at Palma?s most famous bar Abaco, an old Moorish palace filled with art, music and beautiful people, just round the corner. *Enjoy a beer in one of the outside cafes in La Lonja. *Every evening in August there are free open air concerts and movies around the city. *Visit an art gallery - the Fundacio de Caixa or Juan Miro's old house are recommended. *During Easter week Palma hosts many processions. *On 19 January bonfires are lit in the squares and concerts are given for the Patron saint of Palma, St Sebastian. Open the whole year.
